This is the book that started all this blog stuff. Daughter, Liz and I had a phone chat about it and other things; my comments about the book apparently struck a chord with Liz prompting her to install me into my very own blog. Not sure I have that much worthwhile to say. At least there's a record of what I read. Sometimes I forget.
This book won several literary awards and owns several-to-many glowing reviews. My impression while reading was one of waiting for something to happen...always waiting for something big, fun, good, bad, unusual or interesting to liven life of this nice but dull middle-aged woman. Even when bad happened it seemed rather a ho-hum event for Clara. While waiting I was kept reading by the good writing; it's a very well crafted book, but still dull. I do enjoy stories about interesting people and interesting things...and even dull people doing interesting things, or occasionally interesting people doing dull things...but putting dull people together with dull things just doesn't make it for me. The events rarely raise the people to sustainable heights indicating a frozen personality and/or shallow learning curve. Perhaps that impression of this book stems from my having fairly recently read 'I Married Adventure' and 'The Life of Pi' both filled with edge-of-the-seat high adventure. Clara was 180 degrees out from either of those folks. Can't say I'm sorry I wasted my time...it's good to see what is in the literary public favor. Or perhaps I've known too many Clara Callans to allow comfort examining their lives.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, a bowl of whipped cream in the other, my 1935 Pooh Bear and a good book tucked under my arms, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
